Books are an important part of many people’s lives. These are my favorite books, or series, in no order.
Harry Potter by JK Rowling
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone came out in the US when I was 11 years old. I grew up reading these stories and immersed in JK Rowling’s amazing world. My favorite character was a book worm with bushy hair, someone who didn’t always fit in. Kind of like me, well not the book worm part. Reading Harry Potter, I learned that a house does not define you – not all Hufflepuffs are weak, not all Ravenclaws are stuck-up smart bookworms, not all Slytherins are cruel, heartless people, and not all Gryffindors are loyal.
When the movies began coming out in 2001, we were all allowed to see what Hogwarts looked like, what the Chamber of Secrets appeared to be, and so much more. No matter how people liked the casting of certain characters, every single actor portrayed their character to the best of their ability.
Going to Universal Orlando for the first time allowed me to immerse myself more into the Harry Potter world. Seeing the castle, Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley and so much more. Being chosen for the wand choosing ceremony with my best friend was one of my favorite parts.
We will always know that Hogwarts is our Home and I will always be proud to be a Gryffindor.
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
Twilight will always have a special place in my heart. Vampires and wolves have always been fascinating to me. A book about a human and a vampire? Sign me up. I met some of my best friends at my first Twilight convention. I made friends with some of the actors who were in the movies.
Stephenie Meyer’s version of vampires and wolves is different than most I’ve seen, but I loved the books, and after that the film adaptations. While there are some things I would have done differently, or changed, I loved them all the same.
How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather
I am super picky and judgmental about books and movies or tv shows about the Salem Witch Trials. That show on WGN? I could barely stomach watching the first three episodes I usually give new TV shows. The Crucible scared me even when I was in school. But How to Hang a Witch and it’s sequel, Haunting the Deep by Adriana Mather is probably my favorite work of fiction that has to do with the Salem Witch Trials.
How to Hang a Witch is about a young girl named Samantha Mather who for the first time in her life travels to Salem, MA to live. Enter the descendants – five teens whose ancestors were the people who were accused of and put to death for being supposed witches. The whole story is amazing, and I constantly reread it. I really hope that they turn it into a movie or TV show. The actress who played Samantha in the book trailer is amazing and I think she’d be an amazing Samantha Mather.
In the Forests of the Night by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes has been one of my favorite authors since 1999 when her first book In the Forests of the Night came out. The books that followed – Demon in My View, Shattered Mirror, and All Just Glass are some of my favorite books, and I was constantly re-reading them when I was in high school. I’ve always loved writing, and as a teen author, Amelia was someone to look up to.
