College? Me?

This whole Corona Virus thing is messing with so many people’s lives. College students have had to leave their dorms abruptly – some of them having to leave their jobs and go back home. Some of them have jobs in the cities that they go to school in, and they’ve had to leave those jobs as well.

Several colleges are offering online education for their students. Some companies are offering free classes for everyone, people affected by this virus, and those essential workers who are still working. Coursera is offering 3000+ courses from top universities such as Duke, Stanford, Penn, and more. Sophia.org is offering several free classes until the end of July.

And Florida Atlantic University is offering their Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Management for free. Through a series of five online sessions in April, participants can learn about the core components required for success in the hospitality industry. The sessions cover hospitality law, career competencies, marketing and revenue management, finance fundamentals and service excellence. FAU’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program is ranked as one of the top 30 hospitality programs in the country. Typically, the cost is $900 per participant, but FAU is waiving all fees.

I’ve NEVER taken any college courses. The only non-high school courses I’ve ever taken are cake decorating classes from AC Moore (which is now closing). I’ve always had an interest in Hospitality and Event Management. Event Management has part to do with working conventions, something I’ve been interested in for a while. But college was never really part of the plan. I never knew what I wanted to do in high school, I continued working at Wegmans. I don’t know if Hospitality is going to be my new career or just something I’m always going to be interested in, but the ability to take this free Certificate course is a blessing in disguise, I guess.

You can still sign up – you’ll be wait-listed though, until May – and take this free course. Over 60,000 people have signed up for this class. My start date is April 10th. I hope to do a blog post during and after this course. I hope that I learn a lot. This year has already been a year of discovery – I learned so much about conventions, and myself already – and I hope that this is another positive learning experience.
